FAQ

What is your jewellery made from?

Each piece is made from polymer clay which is a lightweight yet strong material. The metal used in each piece varies depending on the style and will be specified in the item description. Most pieces of jewellery are with high quality gold filled metal.

What is Gold Filled?

Gold filled metal is different to gold plated because it has a much higher percentage of real gold in it and it is much higher quality than gold plated. Gold plated metal has a very thin layer of gold applied to the surface of a base metal such as brass. Gold plated metal can tarnish over time depending on how it is stored. However, gold filled metal uses much thicker, high quality 14K gold which is mechanically bonded to a base metal. This results in a much more durable piece of metal for your jewellery which won't tarnish. Some of my pieces are even hallmarked to show the exact level of real gold content.

Is your jewellery hypoallergenic?

I am always conscious of people with sensitivities to certain metals. All of elements used in my jewellery are lead nickel free and gold filled jewellery is great for sensitive ears due to its high gold content. If you have a particular metal need, e.g. titanium posts, please get in touch via the contact page or email me at astoryofclay@outlook.com

How heavy are the pieces?

Polymer clay is extremely lightweight! People are always surprised at how light and comfortable it is to wear - even if the pieces are on the larger side. Most earrings weigh between 1g - 3g!

How do I care for my jewellery?

The polymer clay in your new jewellery is conditioned and baked in a specific way to ensure it is strong and durable. However, it is not invincible! While polymer clay has some flexibility to it, please don't bend your pieces as this may cause them to break.

Try to avoid getting your jewellery wet. Don't wear it swimming or in the shower as this could cause damage. It is also a good idea to put your jewellery on after applying make-up, hairspray or perfume. When not wearing your jewellery keep it stored in a clean, dry and covered place. The cotton bag that they arrive in is perfect for this.

To keep your jewellery clean your can use a soft damp cloth on the clay pieces. To clean the gold plated components you can use a soft dry jewellery cloth. Be careful not to use water or any abrasive cleaning agents on plated metal as this may remove the shiny gold surface. To clean any brass components use a soft toothbrush and either a brass cleaner or a homemade paste of baking soda and white vinegar.
